Norman Mailer, dead at 84
Submitted by damian on Sat, 2007-11-10 23:47.Pulitzer Prize winning American author Norman Mailer has died. He was 84.
Mailer won the Pulitzer in 1969 for his work, The Armies of the Night, and in 1980 for The Executioner's Song
.
I have read very little of Mailer's work. Ancient Evenings, which is apparently out of print, and a few collected pieces of essays and reviews.
Here are a few articles, taken from around the world, on Mailer's life and times:
LA Times - Includes excerpts from 3 of his works
Voice of America - Mailer a "Cultural Icon"
Buzzle - A good, long article
The Associated Press
Bloomberg
New York Times
Time
Reuters
Other links:
Times Online - review of Mailer's last novel, The Castle in the Forest
At the moment, the press seems focused on his work rather than his ego, which was massive, or his generally difficult persona. I expect this will change as the giddiness wears off, but for the moment there is a consensus of celebration over a great writer's life.
